D Dubrovnik was our last stop on our tour of Croatia, and it did not disappoint! We arrived by ferry from the island of Hvar and stayed at our AirBnB inside the walls of the Old Town. Old Town Dubrovnik is surrounded by medieval walls that enclose the city. There are only 4 "gates" in which you can enter. Our taxi dropped off at one of the main gates, Pile Gate. As we walked through the gate, we were utterly in awe at the beauty and character surrounding us. Greeting us was a 15th-century spring-fed fountain. After stopping for a refreshing drink, we stumbled down the main street of Stradun in wounder. Slowly making our way down the thoroughfare, we fell into silence as beautiful limestone streets surrounded us, buildings, churches, and the tall bell tower at the end of Stradun. We veered off the main street and made our way through the narrow sidewalk alleys and up the many steps to our Airbnb. Our apartment was excellent and located on the south wall of Old Town. It was two stories and had a view of Old Town rooftops on one side and a view of the sea and Lokrum Island on the other side. We spent our family's time in Dubrovnik exploring the Old Town shops, museums, cafes, restaurants, walking the narrow sidewalks, and finding all the Game of Thrones filming locations! There are no vehicles inside the Old Town, but everything is easily accessible on foot! We made our way outside the walls to spend a day at Banje Beach and tour Lovrjenac Palace.
We also took a quick 30-minute water taxi over to Lokrum Island and spent a few hours walking around and swimming. We highly recommend visiting Lokrum while in Dubrovnik! We headed up to the top of Srdj Hill by cable car for the most amazing views and got terrific panoramic views of the Old Town and the islands off the coast. At the top is a yummy restaurant to grab a bite and enjoy the view! Another must-do while in Dubrovnik is a walk around the walls surrounding the Old Town. It is a self-guided walk and gives you amazing views of the Adriatic and Lokrum to the south and the entire Old Town as you make your way back around to the north walls. It was so cool to be standing on the 200 feet high walls looking down at the Adriatic Sea on one side and over the rooftops on the other side! There is so much to see and do while in Dubrovnik, and everything is so close and walkable. The food and restaurant selection was abundant and affordable. The food was terrific, and we enjoyed our evening dinners and morning espresso at the cafes. At the end of each day, our tradition was to head to the famous Buza Bar, through the small door on the south wall, to watch the sunset. This was one of the most unique and best places we have ever seen the sunset. It is a bar on the cliffs just outside the walls and has a fantastic overlook of the Adriatic Sea, Lokrum Island, and an unobstructed view of the sunset! Another must-do, and it is kid-friendly! Dubrovnik was so fabulous, safe, and friendly, and one of our favorite places. Our family fell in love with Croatia, and we can’t wait to get back to Dubrovnik!
