Walking the streets of Rome was like being in a perpetual museum. Around every corner lied wonderful ancient architecture and remnants of the Roman Empire which was bustling 2000 years prior!
After some in-depth research, our family choose a beautifully appointed AirBnB that was 1 block away from the epic Roman Colosseum. We could look out our AirBnB window and see the Colosseum it which was surreal. We walked from one end of the city to the other and explored its different neighborhoods and visited every iconic sight possible. Experienced Rome mostly untouched and without crowds was a once in a lifetime opportunity.
We were one of the few American tourist families in Rome at the time due to the pandemic!
For our kids, this was an amazing and unique learning experience. We walked into the Colosseum, the Forum, the Pantheon, the Vatican, and its museums with no crowds. Many of the museums we had 100% to ourselves for extended periods of time. Our family wandered the streets and had wonderful handmade pasta, shopped the famous Via Del Corso, watched the sunset from the top of the Spanish Steps, stumbled across the amazing Trevi Fountain, and visited Vatican City.
The most incredible experiences was seeing the Pope in Vatican Square on a rainy Sunday morning.
While in Vatican City we toured a nearly empty St. Peters Basilica the world's largest church. As the center for Catholicism and home to Pope Francis, St. Peters Basilica is typically bustling with activity and long lines. However, with the coronavirus surge in Italy and mass travel restrictions throughout the world visiting St. Peters brought a sense of spiritual calm and reflection. We were able to freely wander the entire basilica and languidly view historical Catholic works of art like Michelangelo's Pieta and the Pope's Papal Altar. St. Peters Basilica is one of the most awe-inspiring places our family has ever had the honor to visited and is a must-see when traveling to Rome.
Unexpected surprises were abundant around every corner as we zipped through the streets on electric scooters, stumbled across Mission Impossible movie sets, shopped the vintage markets, and finding the best tasting gelato and cannolis. Every evening we sat in different piazzas during aperitivo hour and reveled in the ambiance of the city and counted our blessings! Falling in love with the Eternal City of Rome was easy and we hope you fall in love too.
